Carmen Goes to Den Haag

1.08.2007

Well we started our holidays with a few days in London. It was a littl cold but with no snow. We arrived Christmas day and for the next 3 days just walked around checking out the sights. We must have walked 12 kilometers a day, partly because no transit was running and taxis were too expensive, and partly because we were in no rush and just wanted to explore. We caught the end of Christmas mass at St. Paul's Cathedral, and got an invitation to a free Christmas turkey supper at All-Hallows-By-The-Tower. Greg loved that. He'd already expressed sadness to miss his favorite holiday food this year. We saw most of the big sights, like Big Ben and the Tower Bridge and the British Museum.

After London we flew into Tunis. We got in really late and spent the first day just looking around the area we were in, called Hammamet. It was kind of touristy, well... really touristy, but it was pretty and had lots of beach to walk down. We rode a camel through some olive groves, and took a bus Sidi Bou Said, which is this shot of the white buildings and the blue trim. It reminded me of what Greece is supposed to look like. It was a really pretty little town up on a hill and over looking the ocean.

And of course what Tunisia is really famous for is Carthage, which has been sacked so many times that there is not much left. The best site left is the old Roman baths which are situated right beside the President's Palace.

Hey Carm,
Been a long time since I commented on your blog, but just so you know, I still have a peek now and then to see what you're up to. Looks like you had a good time with Greg. Glad to see you're greasing the tracks for Kenya...which, by the way, looks like it might happen in the summer of 2008 (but more on that another time). ;-) Have a great semester, and I won't worry if you don't pop your head up much - I hear this one's a toughie...

Tamara
